Tom Szaky is the 26 year old Founder and CEO of TerraCycle, Inc. one of the fastest growing eco-friendly product manufacturers in the country. Tom dropped out of Princeton University at age 19 to found TerraCycle by making its flagship product, an organic fertilizer made from worm poop and packaged in reused soda bottles. At the time it was the first consumer product made from and packaged in waste.
Since those humble beginnings in a Princeton area garage, Tom has grown TerraCycle into a major player in the ever-growing sustainable consumer products industry. In 2008, TerraCycle has over 50 different products available at retailers like Target, Wal*Mart, The Home Depot and OfficeMax to name just a few. Spanning different categories from home and garden to office and school to cleaning to accessories and bags, TerraCycle products are unified by the materials used in each, garbage.
TerraCycle currently runs nationwide upcycling fundraisers that pay schools and non-profits to collect non-recyclable materials link drink pouches, yogurt cups, energy bar wrappers, cookie packaging and much more. TerraCycle partners with companies like Kraft Foods, Stonyfield Farm, CLIF BAR and Honest Tea to help collect waste packaging and upcycle it into eco-friendly products for sale at major retailers. In 2006, TerraCycle was named "The Coolest Little Start Up in America" by Inc. Magazine. That same year Inc. named Tom the #1 young CEO in America in their '30 under 30 Awards'.
This year Tom and TerraCycle were named the "2008 Brand Innovator of the Year" by BrandPackaging magazine and won The Home Depot Environmental Stewardship Award for the second time in 4 years. This are just a few of the many accolades awarded to TerraCycle who in 2008 is on course to break 8 million dollars in sales, doubling in size for the 5th consecutive year.
